I'm on a roll, let's try Avignon

Well, it's not quite Van Gogh, but you get the idea.  Apparently, cypress trees, three to be exact, are planted in front of places of residence to indicate welcome.

...and more street art...

Below, the Cathedral of Saint Vincent in Avignon...

.....and the Church of Saint Trophine

By the way, we passed the synagogue  The first synagogue on the site was built in 1221; this one dates from the 1880's.  Although the Jews were expelled from most of France in the 14th century, they found sanctuary in Avignon, and it is reported that they enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity during theAvignon papacy.  Unfortunately, it wasn't open, so we couldn't see it or talk to any stray Landsmen.

Philip, our tour guide in Avignon, and Peter, paying close attention as usual....

Pope's Palace in Avignon...

So, after heading back to the ship for lunch, we took a bus to the area where Chateau Neuv de Pape wines are produced, and did a wine tasting there.  I have a fondness for Chateau Neuv de Pape; when we were in law school, believe it or not, that was our wine drink of choice.  (and, again, believe it or not, we could actually afford to drink French wine, which is more than most of us can afford to do now)  Anyway, who knew that they actually made a white (which is not exported), and it was quite wonderful (we bought two bottles to drink later), and their reds are even better than I remembered.  By the time this trip is over, I might actually develop a palate.

Back to the ship, and moving on upriver.   And, tomorrow, on to Viviers, which  we visited on Wednesday, May 16th.  At this point, I feel like I am  pushing my luck, not to mention the lounge is about to close, and my wine has run out.....Good night.
