Into every life a little rain must fall...

...but this is what rain looks like in the desert...

(notice that there is water in the wash.  Briefly, Nora has waterfront.)

And on Wednesday evening at 6:00 P.M., with company arriving on Thursday, Phase I of the renovations is completed.

To be continued.  Phase II begins on March 23, but is much smaller, just the en suite shower and tiles, and a short punch list of things to be attended to.  I am thrilled.  It is like a new place, and now that the place is no longer a construction zone, and the "things to be attended to" list has gotten considerably shorter, my mood has improved substantially.

The bridge boys (Tom, John and Dennis) arrived as advertised on Thursday evening...

...and after the first of many fine meals, this time at old favourite deli Manhattan in the Desert...

...the bridge playing began...

Dennis was the d.j., and approved of my juke box selections - we played pretty much all of them over the course of four days.

And that is pretty much what we did over the course of four days - ate, and played bridge.

Friday night we tried Mario's, where the boys were (again) impressed with the size of the portions and the cheapness of both the food and liquor.

And on Saturday night, friends Art and Wally joined us at Billy Reeds, which is a 28 year desert tradition.  It looks like a French whorehouse, but serves the greatest upscale diner food in the Coachella Valley.

And finally, on Sunday, brunch at the Blue Coyote...

...and then there is John, after we share a pitcher of margaritas...

...and even after all that food, we are thinking ahead to what we might like to try the next time....

The boys were meant to fly out on Sunday night, but their flight was cancelled until Monday noonish.  Oh, too bad, we (or should I say, Tom) got to cook dinner in my new kitchen (the first meal, and I am happy to report that the kitchen works extraordinarily well), and we got to .....play more bridge.

We played 144 boards in all, and in addition to eating and playing bridge, we also talked and laughed a lot, John got a few runs in (he's in training, don't you know), and generally speaking had a great time.

I took them to the airport on Monday morning, and now life is seriously back to normal.  The weather is fabulous (no more rain, unfortunately - California really needs it) and my mood is substantially improved.  Nothing like good friends, good bridge, good food and good weather to do that for you!  Depression is too boring; we'll have no more of it, hopefully, for a while....
