Ulan Ude

Ulan Ude is in the Republic of Burat, one of three Buddhist republics of 89 republics in Russia.  It was originally founded by Cossacks, to protect the new boundary between Mongolia and Russia, which had become a busy trading area...

. ...... Below, a statue of Chekov, who spent time here....

........our local guide......

...lots of remnants of the Socialist era.

...they have a different view of the past.  They don't want to erase it (as we seem to), but rather, want to remember it....

......yet another concert....

...then back to the train, heading to Lake Baikal.......

....  this is the boat for our Lake Baikal trip...

....as I think I mentioned before, the lake is one mile deep, and the largest fresh water lake.  Apparently this is an earthquake area, and there are 200 tremors a year.

There was an open air museum of wooden architecture.  I suppose this is what I really expected Siberia to look like.  And apparently it did - several hundred years ago...

.......yet another impromptu concert...

.......such lush flowers in Siberia came as a surprise....

.......there was a swimming opportunity in the very, very cold lake....

......followed  by a lake shore barbeque....

......and, of course, music....

....and, our good-looking waiter from the train does double duty as a bartender....

That's all I can manage tonight.  I am still not 100%, with not much energy....tomorrow, Irkutsk...
