Day 10 (Tuesday) - Bayreuth

No opera today, so we were going to take the train to Bamberg, a small town nearby which had come highly recommended..  We woke up to rain, though, and decided to hang around town.  we lazed about the hotel for a long time, over large quantities of (bad) coffee, then walked out to find (again) the ubiquitous statue of Wagner....

....and on to the Kunstwerk Museum (otherwise known as the Art Museum).  There was a special exhibit of Morandini, a well-known (so Peter tells me) artist, sculptor and architect....

....as well as, believe it or not, an exhibit about smoking sponsored by - wait for it....British American Tobacco!  (It was surprisingly interesting!)  Sidebar here.  There are far fewer people smoking in Europe than I remembered, and absolutely no smoking debris on the streets, although we have seen packages of cigarettes sold in vending machines...

On to a tour of Maisels, a locally-owned brewery (one of about 400 in Bayern, the name of this region), opened in 1886...

....ending, of course, with a (large) sample.....

and, just as we were leaving, another of the ubiquitous statues....

Both Peter and I are already bored with German food, so opted for, believe it or not, Chinese food for dinner.  It was, as expected, horrible, but in any event, a change.

Hard to believe that tomorrow is our last opera, then off to Munich on Thursday.  So, til then....
