I can't believe I'm finally here....

...but first, rewind for last week's news.  All in all, it seems to have been a busy week, considering everyone seems to think I should have spent it packing.

.... a (very) late birthday dinner at the River Rock Casino with friend Gulshan....

I shouldn't (and usually don't) do buffets any more.  I eat more than I should, but still not enough to justify the price.  But Gulshan really wanted to do this, and noone goes to a buffet alone, so....  It really was quite good, and we don't spend a lot of time together, so all in all, lots of fun.

The week also saw one more (and probably the last of this season) Bard on the Beach event, this time another go at Equivocation (see prior review) with Tom and his former colleague Arthur and his wife....

Even on 5th viewing (twice in Ashland 3 years ago, once in Seattle two years ago, and twice this season at Bard) it is still one of the best modern plays I've seen.

Oops.  I guess it has been more than one week.  Oh, well, moving right along..  Dim sum twice this weekend, the first time with the usual cast of characters (although I think colleague Jennifer, below right) is a new (to you) addition to the group...

.....and, on Sunday, with friend Arlene at the newly reopened (post fire) old favorite The Pink Pearl....

followed by more eating on Monday with colleagues.  Usually, we go for Pho on Mondays, but it was too hot for soup, Vietnamese or otherwise, so we opted for a new (for us) restaurant on the Fraser River, Tugboat Annie's,,,,

Plain pub fare, but good, and great location.

Luckily (what with all this eating), I'm still going my Garry Point walk most evenings...

Remember the wedding from last post?  Well Bobby and Gerardo came up from Seattle to catch their Alaska cruise honeymoon...

We started with - what else - more food, trying the new Vietnamese restaurant in Steveston (name unknown, sorry), and continuing with my wedding present to the happy couple, a dinner at Bishop's.

Bi shop's is reliably on anyone's "Top 10" list of Vancouver restaurants, and I had never been before.  It certainly lived up to its reputation, good atmosphere (an adult restaurant - you could actually hear yourself think) good food (and you didn't need a translator for the menu) and good service (defined by me as attentive without being cloying).  Not to mention good friends.  All in all, a perfect evening!!!

They left for their cruise on Wednesday.  Or, to be more precise, I drove them down to the cruise ship terminal.  It was raining, though, and from the way everyone was driving, you would have thought that noone in Vancouver had ever seen rain before.....

Two more great theater opportunities before I'm off to Germany.  One of our (by"our" I mean Tom and me) favorite theater groups puts on three plays every summer.  We passed on the Jacobean offering (besides restoration comedies and Chekov, among my least favourite), but saw The Cripple of Inishman on Wednesday night and Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart on Thursday night.  Both great plays, well done.  I love seeing actors in repertory, doing very different things every night.  I had seen Cripple before, but never seen The Normal Heart  It was a little hard to watch - I had not thought about all that AIDS death and dying in the 80's for a long time - but a good reminder of how far we have come in such a short period of time.... One wonders how the young people see this play.....

And now, finally, we are at Saturday, August 16th, and friend Geoff is driving me to the airport.  The flights were as one would have wanted them to be, uneventful, arriving safe and sound (and, more surprisingly, sane) in Frankford on Sunday Peter having already arrived at the Hotel Villa Kennedy and waiting for me.

Hotel, as you can see, is lovely....

....only a few blocks from the Main River

We managed to stave off jet lag, and had a lovely walk along the river...

....took advantage of a museum opportunity (the Stadler Museum, lots of Old Masters badly hung), and even managed to stay awake for a great German dinner at the A. Wagner restaurant, long wooden tables, snitzel, apple wine and all....

......after which we walked back to the hotel, and promptly crashed.

Which I am about to do now, so Day 2 in Frankfort will have to wait until next post.....
