More Catching Up

Argh!  By the time I finish figuring out how to do this, we will be home.  Now, where was I before I was so rudely interrupted (by dinner, I might add, which was, as always wonderful.  However, I am  sure blogging will not be easier after two glasses of Chianti!)

We were on the Ponte Vecchio, the old bridge which survived the flood in the 1300's, and has shops and apartments all along it.

We caught the Church of Santa Maria Novella on the way home (after a gelato to sustain life!).

For dinner, we tried one of the restaurants recommended by Rick Steves.  Considering the book we had (pilfered from the B & B in Rome, I confess) was five years old, it was amazing that not only was it still there, it was mobbed - and, as always, delicious (including the chicken liver pate, Italian style, for appetizer).

Today, we were foiled in our attempt to see Michaelangelo's David at the Accademia (lines too long), but had a wonderful four hours at the Uffiza Gallery.  However, my brain hurts at this point - it was like getting a crash course in Art History.  We had a very knowledgeable guide, however (German - so far we have had guides from Germany, Romania, and Nova Scotia), and he certainly had us seeing things we would not ordinarily have seen.  More Fra Filippo Lippi's, Boticrlli's, Leonardo's, then you have ever seen in one place! And so much morel

I should mention that in another successful episode of broken field running, when we couldn't get into the Accademia, Hank went to an archeological museum, and I went for a walk, discovering this statue of Savaronola, in the piazza where he committed his dirty deeds, or at least those that were done in public!

And this just in.  We put on the TV before going to dinner, to discover that there was rioting, complete with teargas, in front of the Colosseum, where we were just a few days ago.  We dodged the bullet (again, as we were in Pompeii the day they were rioting in Rome last week).

Tomorrow, the Accademia (we hope) and the Bargello Museum, and Monday, back to Rome and then on to Madrid.
